Cassie Lee Tolbert

Sunrise August 16, 1949 – Sunset January 8, 2026

Cassie Tolbert was born on August 16, 1949, in Arcola, Texas, to Beatrice and Bubba Mathews. She was the youngest daughter of 17 children, growing up surrounded by family and strong values that would guide her throughout her life.

Driven by a heart for service, Cassie pursued a career in nursing. In the early 1970s, she attended nursing college in Inglewood, California, where she became a Vocational Nurse (LVN) and later an RN.

In the mid to late 1970s, Cassie returned to Texas, where she met and fell in love with Grover Lee Tolbert, Jr. The two were united in marriage and together built a life rooted in love, hard work, and family. They raised four sons: Darrick, Floyd, Demond, and Donald.

Cassie continued her nursing career throughout the surrounding communities of Bastrop, Smithville, and La Grange. After a car accident led her to step back from nursing, Cassie embraced a new chapter by managing the Church’s Chicken in Bastrop, where she faithfully served the community for 20 years, becoming a familiar and trusted presence until the restaurant later closed.

Cassie found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved visiting casinos, playing bingo with her friends, and enjoying her scratch’s. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family.

Cassie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Grover Lee Tolbert, Jr.; her parents, Beatrice and Bubba Mathews; and fifteen of her siblings.

She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Nancy Mathews of Rosharon, Texas; her sister-in-law, Abbie Greene of Bastrop, Texas; and children: Darrick Tolbert of Temple, Texas, Floyd Greer Jr and (wife) Marie Greer, of Bastrop, Texas, Demond Tolbert of Smithville, Texas, Donald Matthews of Bastrop, Texas and D’Aun Tolbert of Smithville,Tx. She is also survived by her 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

A visitation with family and friends to gather and share stories and memories of Cassie's life will take place at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday January 21, 2026 at Bastrop Providence Funeral home starting at 11am. Cassie will be laid to rest at Colorado Cemetery in Smithville, Texas.
