It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Colt Harris, who passed away on April 24, 2025, in Austin, Texas, at the age of 63. Born on April 18, 1962, in San Antonio, Texas, James lived a life marked by quiet strength, deep feeling, and unwavering dedication to his work and loved ones. He built a long and respected career at Vaughn Construction, where he served in various roles over the years, including as a Superintendent, before retiring with pride in the work he had accomplished.
James was a man of reflection and resilience. He carried a depth of emotion that he didn’t always speak aloud, but which showed in the way he loved, hoped, and showed up for others—even when he was struggling himself. In recent times, he shared messages of letting go, starting fresh, and searching for meaning—showing a heart that never stopped reaching for peace, purpose, and connection.
Though quiet by nature, James lit up around the people and places he loved. He especially came alive in the glow of music and friends—nights at country dance halls, warm beach days, and the easy joy of a cold beer and good conversation. He had a way of turning simple moments into lasting memories.
He was a devoted family man, deeply loved by his wife, Michelle Harris, and daughters, Jennifer Sonnen and Tracy Mock. He also shared a close bond with his stepson, Justin Sewell, and found constant comfort in his loyal companion, Penny. James is preceded in death by his parents, Betty Jo Harris and Harvey C. Harris, who shaped the core of his kind and hardworking nature.
A private person with a loyal heart, James always had your back—even if he didn’t say it out loud. His absence leaves an ache, but also a reminder of the quiet, lasting impact of a man who loved deeply and lived authentically.
Visitation will be held at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home on May 7, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with a funeral service beginning at 2:00 PM. Friends and family are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate the life of James—a man whose presence may have been quiet, but whose heart roared with love, strength, and sincerity.
