While in high school, she volunteered as a Red Cross candy striper at the Naval Hospital in Corpus Christi, TX providing care for pediatric clinic patients. During this time, she met George Placek, where he was stationed as a Naval Hospital Corpsman and running a pediatric clinic. They married on September 9, 1971,while at the wedding rehearsal. Hurricane Fern was making its imminent approach onto Corpus Christi and the couple decided it would be best to go ahead and get married at the rehearsal in the little church at Corpus Christi Naval Air Station.
George and Joyce moved to San Antonio, TX. Here they began their family with the birth of their first son Kaleb, then Joshua. They received military orders overseas to the Philippines. With the loving desire to grow their family, they adopted Brittany as a baby. Eventually they came back to the United States. They lived in many different states while Joyce supported George’s Air Force career. Joyce was the best mother and found her incredible happiness in raising her family. Many friends and fond memories were made at different military duty stations throughout the years. After George retired from the Air Force, the family returned to Austin, TX. Joyce worked as an administrative executive assistant and retired from PriceWaterhouseCoopers in 2014. George also retired from a law firm as a Legal Nurse Consultant at the same time so they could be retired together. George and Joyce built their country home on beautiful acreage in Elgin, TX.
She took pride in taking care of her home. There wasn’t a holiday Joyce was a stranger to. She had many boxes of decorations for every single holiday. She loved decorating, especially for her favorite holiday, Christmas! She took delight in baking with her granddaughter, Jovie. She would shower the family with a bounty of homemade baked goods. Crocheting was one of her talents; anytime there was a new addition to the family, Joyce would get busy crocheting a baby blanket and Christmas stocking. The beach was her second home, and she frequented it on many family summer trips. Joyce’s greatest treasures were her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and her many fur babies. Family was her heart and soul. She hosted many family gatherings throughout the decades.
Joyce was a follower in Christ. She attended church at Grace Lutheran. Her faith brought her solace and comfort during the months of her valiant journey with Pancreatic Cancer.
