Rex Arthur Drake, 60, of Bastrop, Texas passed away peacefully in his home on January 17, 2026. He was a proud father, loving son, supportive brother, and devoted friend.
Rex was born August 7, 1965 in San Andreas, California, the son of Eugene Drake and Lois (Baldwin) Drake. He lived most of his childhood in the historic town of Sutter Creek, California, and moved to Texas after joining the Air Force in 1979. He was stationed in Lubbock, Texas for most of his years and served as a Fuel Manager refueling aircraft. While serving, he took advantage of the GI Bill and night classes to earn a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech. Following graduation, he devoted nearly 16 years at Jordan & Skala Engineers becoming a principal at the firm before moving on to Mint Engineering, and finally, HMG & Associates.
Rex was an avid hiker and camping enthusiast who traversed the peaks of Wind River, Wyoming at least seven times to stare in awe at its breathtaking view of the Milky Way. He built his own wooden teardrop trailer and kayak to enjoy on his quests to collect quirky photos of landmark signs and unique adventures. He was instrumental in starting a Friends of the NRA branch in Bastrop, Texas; and he was blessed to be part of a gregarious group of friends who understood his wonderful sense of humor.
Rex is survived by his daughter, Abigail of Austin, Texas, who is following in his footsteps in pursuing her own bachelor’s degree. He is also survived by his father and step-mother, Gene and Carlene Drake; two sisters, Annette Gwerder and Jeanine Drake Hachigian; aunts, uncles, cousins and friends; and his faithful fur-buddy, Mollie.
Rex's life will be celebrated on February 21, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home located at 2079 State Hwy 71, Bastrop, TX 78602, with military honors conducted by the Bastrop County Veteran's Honor Guard.
Memorial donations in Rex’s memory may be directed to the Friends of the NRA or your favorite pet rescue or wilderness preservation organization.
